Overview

The Senior Systems Engineer reports to the IT Director and is responsible for design, operations, and support of all enterprise IT infrastructure for Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC), in our Pittsburgh, PA office. This position will oversee the organization’s datacenters, network, server, and cloud infrastructure. The Senior Systems Engineer also acts as 2nd or 3rd tier support for troubleshooting and resolution of infrastructure issues within the IT department.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, support, maintain and improve all aspects of IT infrastructure including storage, virtualization, networking, servers, Active Directory, cloud tenants, messaging, on-premise phone system, monitoring, and patching
  • Oversee resolution of all infrastructure related issues and ensure action plans and status are communicated to other IT teams and business stakeholders
  • Monitor and report performance of infrastructure against KPIs and take preemptive measures to minimize disruptions and outages
  • Identify opportunities and recommend solutions to automate and improve overall infrastructure health, efficiency, and cost
  • Coordinate interaction of infrastructure team with other IT functions and business units to accomplish projects and resolve issues
  • Manage and maintain software licensing, including renewals, compliance tracking, allocation, and forecasting
  • Coordinate services, implementations, escalations, and disconnects with telecommunications vendors
  • Assist with e‑Discovery requests involving unstructured data, email, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, or other digital data sources
  • Troubleshoot advanced issues related to infrastructure, identity, networking, and endpoint systems
  • Serve as Level 2 escalation for technical issues from the Service Desk
  • Create documentation, knowledge articles, and troubleshooting guides to improve first‑call resolution
  • Train and mentor other members of the infrastructure and Service Desk teams to diagnose and resolve basic IT infrastructure issues. Manage third-party consultants and vendors in support of projects and operations
  • Travel to branch offices for office moves and infrastructure upgrades (20%)
  • Other duties, as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, a related field, plus ten years’ relevant experience with 5 years in IT Infrastructure (knowledge of networking, security and applications). Additional experience may be substituted for education
  • Technical proficiency with hypervisor technologies (Microsoft, VMware, etc.), enterprise storage providers (Nasuni, Dell, NetApp, Pure, Nimble, etc.), Microsoft platforms (Azure, O365, server OS, Active Directory/Entra, System Center, InTune, Exchange Online, etc.), public cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, Google GCP)
  • Experience with build-out and management of data centers (on-premises, co-location, and cloud)
  • Ability to conduct research into issues and products as required
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Comfortable under high-stress and exhibits poise and focus
  • Effective prioritization and project management skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail
  • Self-motivated and directed
